University and IBD
Firstly, do not be afraid to tell the university that you have IBD. Every university has an equal opportunities policy and no one can discriminate on account of your condition. However, we were interested in the different responses from each of my son’s five choices, which went from ignoring the condition to specifically offering him an interview with a Disability Support Officer and arranging his entry interview with a Disability Liaison Officer.
If you are offered an interview try to see a Disability Support Officer on the same day. Take along a copy of the NACC Help Sheets, although a good adviser will probably have an idea of what you need and what can be offered. In particular, I remember my son being advised to apply for ‘catered’ rather than ‘self-catered’ accommodation as you cannot rely on other students to cook for you if you are ill. Also, ask about travel arrangements; we found they ranged from nil to “we will send you a free mini bus if you are under the weather”. It is also worth finding out about the student GP centre as they will be providing your regular care, blood tests and medication. My son found this was an advantage of a campus university as every facility was close to his place of study and the services could be managed by text!
The student adviser will guide you through a claim for a Disabled Students Allowance. Not only is there financial assistance with the cost of ensuite accommodation, the university has to make adaptations to cater for your condition. This may include coursework extensions and additional time to complete your exams. The advantage of discussing the requirements in advance is that everything can be put in place for when you arrive at university, rather than waiting until you have a flare up. You will then have the confidence to get on with living student life.
| Fundraising is hugely important to NACC, without the money raised we would not be able to provide the New Patients Pack's or other information sheets, support the helplines or Local Groups. Last year in Colitis and Crohn's week we were supported by Jeff Hordley, from Emmerdale, as Carrie Grant has done in the past. But did you Know that Rick Parfitt Junior, born into rock royalty, and an accomplished musician in his own right is also supporting NACC. The RPJ Rock Band has enjoyed successful tours and collaborations with artists ranging from Robbie Williams to Lily Allen and | ![]() |
