Congratulations Helen!

We are so pleased to hear that Helen Ludlow, IBD Specialist Nurse and South Wales Group Organising Team member, has been named as the Wales Regional Winner of the Crohn's and Colitis UK IBD Nursing Award 2012. Helen had no idea she had been nominated for the award by her patients, and to be recognised in this way means a huge amount to her. Helen said "Everything I do in this job, it is to make peoples lives easier in what ever way that might be, and for them (my patients) to take the time out to nominate me, means that hopefully I have made a difference for them, and that just means everything really."

Helen, we would like to say on behalf of all of your patients and friends how proud we are of you, and how pleased we are for you. Congratulations. Well deserved. You can see the short video of Helen that was shown at the awards presentation night by visiting the home page of Crohn's and Colitis UK and clicking on Helen's name in the '2012 IBD Nursing Awards Winners' news story.

Red Hot Ted's Big Adventures

This summer we collected some pics of Red Hot Ted letting his fur down at the Reading Festival, lazing by a pool in in Portugal, and even enjoying the views at the Grand Canyon, - see 'Teddy Tomlins' above! It got us thinking that it would be fun to do something with these pics. Do you have a Red Hot Ted in your family? If so, email us your snaps of Ted on his adventures, whether abroad, at a local event, or just having fun (sw@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk) and, each month, we will choose the best pics to put up on the News Panel of our website. If you don't already have a Ted in your family, they can be purchased from the merchandise section of the Crohn's and Colitis UK main website - link at the top of this panel. We're looking forward to seeing just what your Ted's get up to!

'Jam for James' Charity Night Success

A charity fundraising night organised by Phil Rookyard, Clare Foley and the friends and family of James Harris took place at O'Neills, Cardiff, on Sunday 18th September. The night included live acoustic sets from 6 artists, a charity auction and raffle. The night was a great success and a fitting tribute to James who sadly passed away earlier this year. We would all like to thank everyone who was involved with making the evening happen, but a special thank you to Phil and Clare who were the driving force behind this. Earlier this month Phil and Clare presented a cheque for for the monies raised by this event, a staggering £1,290, to our Chair, Rachel. The good news doesn't stop there - Phil has joined the South Wales Organising Team, and is getting stuck in to helping organise the Red Hot Ball.

Radyr Golf Club donation

As you may have already read, Radyr Golf Club in Cardiff had chosen support Crohn’s and Colitis UK as one of their nominated charities for the 2011. Our Treasurer, Zara Evans, was invited to the annual prize giving event on Saturday 26th November. Zara was presented with a cheque from the members of the club for £2,750. We are obviously knocked out by this fabulous show of generosity, and extend our warmest thanks and appreciation to all of the Radyr Golf Club members and staff who made this possible.

John Morris Retires

At the 2011 AGM in October, John Morris stepped down as Chair of the South Wales Group. In 2008, the Group was close to disbanding as there was only 4 members. John put a call out to the South Wales membership to try and create a new Organising Team, offering to put himself forward as Chair. Over the last 4 years John has put his energy into guiding the Team through all of our fundraising activities and meetings. His persistence has resulted in a successful team of 13 people, and a steady increase in funds raised that is looking towards the £4,000 mark this year. We owe John a huge debt of gratitude, and are so pleased that he has said he will stay in touch and attend the odd meeting.

We'll take this opportunity to congratulate our new Chair, Rachel Owen, who we're sure will do just as great a job as her predecessor.

Hello and welcome to the homepage of the South Wales Group of Crohn's and Colitis UK.

Please use the links to the left of the screen to find out a little more about who we are, what it is we hope to achieve, upcoming events, how to receive or download our newsletter, and how you can take an active part in attending or helping to organise Crohn's and Colitis UK events in SouthWales. We hope you find the information on these pages useful. If you have any queries, suggestions or articles that you would like to share with fellow Crohn's and Colitis UK members, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our email or telephone number on the ‘contact us’ link.

Keep an eye on our Activities Page. With the invaluable help and organisation of the South Wales IBD Nursing Team, we have been able to support some extremely informative IBD evenings at local hospitals. The subjects so far have included Diet, Surgical Options, Medicines (usage and side-effects) and Bowel Screening. The events happen at different venues across South Wales to ensure everyone has the chance of attending at least one talk, relatively close to home. Each event has a Question and Answer session on each topic, giving IBD sufferers and their families a chance to ask the experts about anything they are interested in or worried about.

Lord Mayor's Charity Day, Roath Park, Cardiff

Saturday 21st July has been confirmed as the Roath Park Charities day. This is a worthwhile event that involves about twenty charities taking over the gardens at Roath Park. There are stalls of all descriptions - cakes, plants, tombolas, owls, hot dogs, teas etc. We will have a stall there as we have done for the past 3 years. If you can make it, come down and say hi.

Royal Glamorgan Hospital IBD Nurses host a successful education evening

On Wednesday 14th March, 2012, Dr Hawkes, Consultant Gastroenterologist, and the IBD Nurses, organised a Patient Education Evening at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The title of Dr Hawkes talk was 'Endoscopic Appearances of Crohn's and Colitis'. Dr Hawks gave a fascinating insight into how IBD affects the colon. Rhian Thomas, Dietician, gave a talk on Diet and it's effects on IBD. Both Rhian and Dr Hawkes then took questions from the floor after their talks. The South Wales Group of Crohn's and Colitis UK attended and set up a stall, with information, literature and merchandise, where we took over £60.00 from extremely generous donations. It was lovely to see so many members, and get to have a chat with you all. We would like to thank Dr Hawkes and Rhian for giving their time so generously, and also a huge thanks to Lisa and IBD team at Royal Glam for organising everything so well.

Postponement - Date TBA

The Red Hot Ball, which was to be held on Saturday 19th May 2012 - at Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff, has been potponed to a date later in the year. Our first choice speaker for the event couldn't make the date, which was unfortunate, but not disastrous, However, the band we had booked, who had generously offered to entertain for no payment, have had to cancel. This left us with a dilemma as the only option we have is to hire a band, which will eat significantly in to any money we were hoping to raise for Crohn's and Colitis UK. We have taken the decision to postpone until we have the speaker of choice and have sourced a band that will agree to play for a nominal fee (or for free if possible).

Please keep watching this space for further updates. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes. If you have any queries around this, or would like email updates, please email: SWGroupevents@hotmail.co.uk

Late last year we ran a competition with the First Year BA Graphic Communications students at Atrium, Glamorgan University to design a logo for our Red Hot Ball. The standard of entries was outstanding and we had a very hard job to decide which was the winning design. Eventually, we chose the design above. The logo was designed by Rhys Lowry who, as the winning design, received a logo design book from us all. We would like to take this opportunity to thanks all of the students and staff At Atrium for their hard work and input. We intend to use the logo on all materials relating to our Red Hot Ball.

Organising Team Members

We are always trying to think of new ways to raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis UK. At the moment the OT has 13 members. The more people we have on board, the more events we are able to attend, the more potential there is for raising awareness and funds for research. This also enables us to have definite areas of responsibility when taking on the fundraising tasks, and the running of the Team. If you would like to become a member of the Team, have an area of expertise that you think may help us, or have any ideas for fundraising events, please contact us through the email link. We would love to hear from you.
